P.A.I.N.T.S. ANNOUNCES ACTIVITIES FOR ART IS EDUCATION MONTH
|
March 6, 2009 (Piedmont, CA)—PAINTS (Promote Art in the Schools, Inc.) will once again offer community events in March as part of Art IS Education month, as declared by Alameda County Superintendent of Schools, Sheila Jordan. In addition, the non-profit organization that supports art education in all of Piedmont’s six schools will offer a special series of grants for Piedmont educators.
On Sunday, March 29 from 12noon-3pm, PAINTS will open the doors of Ellen Driscoll Theater (325 Highland Ave.) for an art show and a Mad Hatter Tea party. The art show will encompass work from a variety of levels of Piedmont students. The Mad Hatter Tea party will be hat making party where recycled brown paper bags and other materials will be transformed by Piedmont children, with assistance from MOCHA (Museum of Children’s Art), into uniquely creative hats. A children’s “tea” and cookies will be served. There will be a special visitor, an actual “Mad Hatter”, to entertain and interact with the children. The events are free and the entire community is encouraged to attend.
As a sort of “Arts Stimulus Promotion”, the PAINTS board of directors has decided to offer a one-time series of special grants to teachers, specialists, and administrators—basically any educator—to attend one of a list of Alameda County Office of Education approved arts workshops or courses. PAINTS will pay for the fees associated with the courses. “We feel that many teachers may be hesitant to apply for classes on their own given the State’s economic condition and the resulting potential of staff or program cuts in our schools. In keeping with our mission to integrate art into all curriculums, we feel that the regular classroom teachers, especially those in the elementary schools, may end up providing the majority of our children’s art education in the classroom in the next year,” says PAINTS president Kim Belchamber.
“The courses offered are fabulous. They range from dance to studio art to art for occupational therapists who deal with children with special needs. We hope that may of our educators take advantage of our offer,” adds Belchamber. (For a complete list of courses, go to PAINTS website at www.piedmontpaaints.org.)
The money for the special grants comes from PAINTS fundraising efforts. Last year’s Bird House Gala raised a record $30K. “This year is PAINTS 20th anniversary, so the event, which will take place on May 29 at a beautifully, renovated home and garden on Glen Alpine, will celebrate PAINTS anniversary as well as offer more one-of-a-kind birdhouses and original art at the silent and Live auctions,” notes Karen Stanton, PAINTS Bird House Gala creator and coordinator.
PAINTS is a non-profit membership organization of parents and community members whose mission is to promote visual arts in the Piedmont schools. It provides a forum for parents, teachers and administrators to focus on planning a coordinated art curriculum through the Piedmont school district.
